Cufflinks are small functional and decorative items that are used to hold the cuffs of a man’s shirt together. Or, to put it another way, to link the two cuffs. Back in the day, in the 13th century, men held the shirt cuffs together with pieces of string, believe it or not. Then noblemen started to use decorative ribbons to do the job, and because the fashion was started by noblemen, tying the cuffs using fancy ribbons became something of a status symbol.
However, if you think about it, tying the cuffs together with one hand is not the easiest job in the world, and eventually embellished buttons, or what today we call cufflinks, took over. Of course, the noblemen made sure to display their wealth by having gemstones on display on the front of the cufflinks.
It was not until the Industrial Revolution that cufflinks started to be mass produced and so this was when they became available to everyone rather than just the wealthy. Of course, designers set about producing more and more designs and using different materials and patterns. The result was that men became concerned with wearing the “right” sort of design of cufflinks for specific occasions.
Today, of course, we have cufflinks in a never-ending choice of designs from the formal to the funny to the downright grotesque. Google the words “buy cufflinks” and there are over 22 million results. The top advert is for a company that claims to stock over 5,000 designs of cufflinks – and that is just one store! However, they are only retailers, and not designers and manufacturers as we are at Wimbledon Cufflink Company.
