When it comes to a man’s wardrobe, there is no law which says that you have to wear shirts with French double cuffs and use cufflinks with which to secure them. Quite the opposite, in fact. These days, you can wear whatever you choose, unless you happen to have a job or career which requires you to wear a uniform.
In fact, many jobs do require a uniform, from checkout assistants in Tesco to hotel receptionists to members of the Coldstream Guards, but even then, none of them require you to wear a double cuff shirt with cufflinks.
So why do so many men wear them?
The answer is basically very simple: they are worn by men who wish to stand out and be recognised for who they are and what they do. They are worn by people who wish to look smart, because not only does that make them stand out from the crowd, but it also shows respect for others. And it is a simple fact that if you show respect for others, they, in turn, will show respect to you for so doing. And it is not only a matter of respect. Dressing smartly, no matter what the occasion, makes a man appear to be important, for the simple reason that so many people just cannot be bothered to do so. You can wear any sort of shirt, from those with buttoned cuffs to those with half sleeves to T-shirts which have no sleeves at all to speak of.
But consider this: how much respect would you have for an MP who turned up in the House of Commons in a T-shirt and jeans? Would you vote for that man for your MP? We all know the answer to that one. You want your MP to show respect to you and listen to your ideas and opinions, and one of the most important ways that he does that is by dressing smartly in public. OK, when at home, or at the weekend walking up the towpath by the river or across a field in the country, and going to the pub for a well-earned pint, he can dress down the same as anyone else. But when on show in the public eye he has to look the part and impress.
And if you want to impress, you need to do this also. If you are a painter and decorator, then fair enough, you cannot be expected to wear smart clothing. You don’t want to get it covered in paint. But if you work in an office, are part of a sales team, or deal with customers face to face, then you need to look the part. Think about this: if you owned a business and employed staff, who would you consider for promotion – all other things being equal? The man who comes into the office dressed in casual clothes or the one who wears a smart suit, shirt, tie, and impressive cufflinks?
That’s another no brainer, isn’t it? The man who dresses smartly is showing respect for you as the boss and obviously wants to give of his best. The guy who dresses in casual clothes is in effect saying that he couldn’t give a monkey’s about you or your business, and if you sack him, so what? There’s always another job around the corner.
Except that, as a result of Covid-19, there may very well not be another job around the corner. A lot of businesses have gone bust. Many others have had to downsize. Who do you suppose will be kept on?
